I get wanting familiarity with our medical providers, but I have a good white, female therapist. I recently tried a black OB/GYN and she dismissed me - for what reason I don't know, but I think it was because I continued to call to get questions answered from my lab work and when I finally spoke to her, I asked questions for clarity and understanding that i think challenged her. Not that she couldn't answer them, but she did not want to. She seemed to take my questions as not believing her. Soooo, i say all that to say this: I get the familiarity angle, but by default every black medical provider is not a good one and every good medical provider is not black. And I know you know this, but your article reads like you only found success because you found a black woman. I think it is GREAT you found someone, and maybe for you, race makes the connection stronger. For me, its compassion, respect, and knowledge - they can be purple...just take care of me, please.
